Diagnosis of Major Depressive Disorder
What is Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)?
Dr. NNEKA ONYIA, Psychiatrist, explains what Major Depressive Disorder is.
Major Depressive Disorder, commonly known as depression, is characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and a lack of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed. It affects a person’s ability to function in daily life. Common signs include:
- Persistent sadness or low mood.
- Loss of interest in activities, including hobbies or social events.
- Fatigue or lack of energy.
- Difficulty concentrating, making decisions, or remembering.
- Sleep disturbances (insomnia or oversleeping).
- Thoughts of death or suicide.
What Causes Major Depressive Disorder?
MDD is often caused by a combination of genetic, environmental, and psychological factors. Stressful life events, family history, imbalances in brain chemicals, and certain medical conditions can contribute to the development of depression.
How is MDD Diagnosed?
Diagnosis typically involves a comprehensive mental health evaluation, including a discussion of symptoms, medical history, and possible physical health issues.
How is MDD Treated?
• Medication: Antidepressants, such as SSRIs or SNRIs, to correct chemical imbalances.
• Therapy: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) or other therapeutic approaches.
• Lifestyle Changes: Regular exercise, a healthy diet, and sleep hygiene can also play a role in treatment.
What Happens if MDD is Not Treated?
Untreated MDD can lead to serious consequences, including worsening symptoms, difficulty maintaining relationships, work impairment, and even suicide.
MDD By The Numbers...
• Nearly 7% of U.S. adults experience major depression each year.
• Women are twice as likely as men to be diagnosed with MDD.
