Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) is characterized by an intense fear of being judged, criticized, or embarrassed in social or performance situations. This fear can interfere with daily activities and cause significant distress. Common signs include:
- Extreme fear of social interactions or public speaking.
- Physical symptoms like sweating, shaking, or a racing heart in social situations.
- Avoidance of social gatherings or situations that involve being observed.
A strong fear of being negatively evaluated by others.
What Causes Social Anxiety Disorder?
Social Anxiety Disorder can result from a combination of genetic predisposition, negative past experiences, and learned behaviors. It may also be triggered or worsened by stressful events.
How is Social Anxiety Disorder Diagnosed?
Diagnosis is made through a thorough mental health evaluation that includes an assessment of symptoms, social history, and possible physical health concerns.
How is Social Anxiety Disorder Treated?
• Therapy: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is highly effective in treating SAD.
• Medication: Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or benzodiazepines may be prescribed for anxiety relief.
• Exposure Therapy: Gradual exposure to feared situations to reduce anxiety.
• Around 15 million adults in the U.S. have Social Anxiety Disorder.
• SAD is the second most common anxiety disorder in the U.S.
