What is Suicidal Ideation?
Dr. NNEKA ONYIA, Suicide Prevention Specialist, explains Suicidal Ideation.
Suicidal ideation refers to thinking about, considering, or planning suicide. These thoughts can vary in intensity, from fleeting thoughts of wishing to be dead to detailed plans for ending one’s life. Common signs include:
- Persistent thoughts about death or dying.
- A sense of hopelessness or feeling trapped.
- Withdrawal from social connections or loved ones.
- Giving away possessions or talking about death in a detached way.
What Causes Suicidal Ideation?
Suicidal thoughts can result from mental health conditions like depression, anxiety, or bipolar disorder. Life stressors, trauma, substance abuse, or a history of suicidal behavior can also contribute.
How is Suicidal Ideation Diagnosed?
A mental health professional will assess the intensity and frequency of suicidal thoughts through an evaluation, asking questions about thoughts, past attempts, and emotional triggers.
How is Suicidal Ideation Treated?
• Emergency Intervention: Immediate care may be necessary in severe cases.
• Therapy: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) are effective treatments.
• Medication: Antidepressants and mood stabilizers may help alleviate underlying symptoms.
Suicidal Ideation By The Numbers...
• Each year, approximately 45,000 people die by suicide in the U.S.
• 1 in 5 people will experience suicidal thoughts at some point in their lifetime.
