What is Trauma?
Dr. NNEKA ONYIA, Trauma Specialist, explains what trauma is.
Trauma refers to emotional, psychological, or physical harm caused by overwhelming events or experiences. Trauma can affect an individual’s ability to cope with life and often results in long-term mental health challenges. Common signs include:
- Flashbacks or intrusive memories of the traumatic event.
- Emotional numbness or detachment.
- Difficulty forming or maintaining relationships.
- Heightened anxiety or hypervigilance.
- Avoidance of reminders or triggers related to the trauma.
What Causes Trauma?
Trauma can be caused by a variety of life experiences, including physical, emotional, or sexual abuse, neglect, accidents, or witnessing violence. The severity of the trauma depends on the individual and the circumstances surrounding the event.
How is Trauma Diagnosed?
A mental health professional will conduct a thorough assessment to determine if the individual is suffering from trauma or a related condition, such as PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder).
How is Trauma Treated?
• Trauma-Focused Therapy: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and other therapies are effective in treating trauma.
• Medication: Antidepressants or anti-anxiety medications may be prescribed to manage symptoms of trauma-related disorders.
• Supportive Care: Group therapy, social support, and lifestyle adjustments can help the healing process.
Trauma By the Numbers...
• Approximately 70% of adults in the U.S. have experienced at least one traumatic event in their lifetime.
• 1 in 11 people will develop PTSD after experiencing trauma.
